An increasing number of women going to prison means that more and more children are suffering as the silent victims of the crimes of their mothers.
Mothers and Their Children reunites children with the person who can make the biggest difference in their lives and their futures: their mothers.
Studies show that frequent, regular visitation is beneficial to children of incarcerated parents. Children who visit their incarcerated parents do better in school, are happier, better adjusted, and better behaved. Mother-child visitation helps children in several ways:
- Visits allow children to express their emotions regarding the separation and helps lessen the effects of it.
- Visitation in a home-like atmosphere allows the children to see their mothers in a maternal role and learn from her during everyday activities.
- Visits allow children to deal with their fears about their mother being in prison and help them to form a more realistic understanding of her circumstances.
- Visits allow parents and children to maintain and strengthen their existing relationships and helps them reunite successfully as a family after incarceration.
